AEFAEF abrdn Emerging Markets ex-China Fund, Inc.

abrdn Emerging Markets ex-China Fund, Inc. (NYSE American: AEF) increased its quarterly dividend to $0.26 per share from $0.23, a 13.04% rise. The shares traded ex-dividend on Sept. 22, 2026.

The new rate equates to an annual dividend of $1.04 per share and a forward annual yield of 10.35% based on a share price of $9.83. The increase gives AEF one consecutive year of dividend growth after a reduction in 2023. SmarterDividends assigns the payout a safety score of 63 and a grade of C.

Distribution policy and fund strategy

AEF is a non-diversified closed-end fund seeking current income and long-term capital appreciation. Under normal circumstances, it invests at least 80% of its assets, plus investment-related borrowings, in emerging-markets equities outside China. The fund adopted its current name and ex-China mandate in February 2025, retaining its AEF ticker. Its board said the revised strategy would be less influenced by Chinese government policy and more closely aligned with the manager’s bottom-up investment approach, according to the fund’s annual report filed with the SEC.

The fund’s distribution framework helps explain why its payout can change. AEF uses a managed distribution policy under which quarterly payments are based on an annual rate established once a year using average daily net asset value during the preceding three months. The board reviews the policy regularly.

Distributions may be funded by current income, realized capital gains or, when necessary, paid-in capital classified as a return of capital. Consequently, a higher payment does not necessarily indicate an equivalent increase in dividends or interest generated by the portfolio. Aberdeen also cautions that distribution amounts can vary with market conditions and other factors in its fund factsheet.

What it means for income investors

The increase lifts AEF’s annualized cash payout and forward yield at the stated share price. However, the one-year growth record remains short, particularly given the 2023 cut. Investors monitoring the distribution may therefore want to distinguish portfolio income from capital gains or return-of-capital funding and remember that the yield will fluctuate as AEF’s market price changes.
