CNICNI Canadian National Railway Company

Canadian National Railway Company increased its quarterly dividend to $0.663 per share from $0.656, a 1.07% rise. The shares traded ex-dividend on Sept. 8, 2026.

The dividend represents an annualized payout of $2.60 per share and a forward yield of 2.11% based on a share price of $122.76. Canadian National, which trades in New York under the ticker CNI, has now increased its dividend for 28 consecutive years.

The latest adjustment is incremental, adding less than one cent to the quarterly payment. Still, it continues a long-running pattern of annual increases at the industrial-sector company. SmarterDividends assigns the payout a safety score of 93 out of 100 and an A grade.

Canadian National’s board approved its third-quarter distribution in July. The company’s dividend announcement described CN as a major North American freight railroad connecting Canada’s eastern and western coasts with the U.S. Midwest and Gulf Coast through a network spanning nearly 20,000 miles. CN’s dividend announcement provides the company’s official distribution timetable and business overview.

Operating context

The dividend came against a backdrop of stronger operating performance. In its second-quarter update, Canadian National said freight volumes benefited primarily from grain and energy products, while management raised its full-year financial guidance following solid execution during the first half. The company also reported improved free-cash-flow generation and continued share repurchases. Canadian National’s second-quarter results detail those developments.

Earlier in the year, management said its capital-allocation approach emphasized cost discipline, stronger free-cash-flow conversion and sustainable long-term shareholder returns. The company linked its 2026 dividend policy to confidence in its long-term financial health, while also warning that macroeconomic uncertainty and global trade tensions could affect demand. Canadian National’s year-end results outline that rationale and the principal operating risks.

What it means for income investors

Shareholders receive a slightly higher quarterly income stream, while the 28-year growth record remains intact. The 2.11% forward yield is the clearest measure of the dividend’s current income contribution; the safety score and grade indicate a strong payout profile under SmarterDividends’ methodology, though they do not eliminate business or market risk.
