Key takeaways

  • Danaos raised its quarterly dividend 11.1% to $1.00 a share.
  • The new recurring dividend annualizes to $4.00 a share, or $400.00 for 100 shares.
  • The dividend uses 12% of earnings and carries a SmarterDividends safety score of 61.
  • The 2.53% forward yield exceeds the Industrials sector median of 1.66%.

Danaos Corporation raised its quarterly dividend 11.1% to $1.00 a share from $0.90. The shares traded ex-dividend on October 13, 2026, and the payment is scheduled for October 22, 2026.

Why the dividend changed

The declaration established a higher regular dividend and included an extraordinary special cash dividend. The special distribution is separate from the recurring $1.00 quarterly rate and the $4.00 annualized dividend discussed here. Danaos did not give a specific reason for either decision in its declaration.

The operating and balance-sheet context helps explain the board’s capacity to return more cash. Second-quarter adjusted net income rose to $133.1 million from $117.0 million, while adjusted EBITDA increased to $186.8 million from $176.0 million. Danaos added approximately $683 million of contracted revenue after its preceding earnings release, taking its backlog to $4.6 billion. Contracted operating-day coverage for the containership fleet stood at 100% for 2026, 93% for 2027, 79% for 2028 and 61% for 2029, providing visibility beyond the current period, according to the company’s latest quarterly results.

Danaos also reported total liquidity of approximately $1.5 billion, net leverage of 0.3 times and 78 of its 87 operating vessels free of debt. Chief Executive John Coustas said that position allowed the company to pursue expansion opportunities. At the same time, Danaos is financing new containerships and expanding its dry-bulk operations, meaning shareholder distributions compete with substantial fleet-investment requirements. The company also had approximately $65 million of capacity remaining under its share-repurchase authorization when it reported second-quarter results.

Dividend track record

The latest increase extends Danaos’ dividend-growth streak to 4 consecutive years. Its regular quarterly payments rose from $0.80 in August 2024 to $0.85 in November 2024, then to $0.90 for each of the first three listed payments of 2026 before reaching $1.00 in October 2026. The sequence shows a stepped approach rather than uniform annual increases.

Annual payments totaled $1.50 in 2021, when Danaos last cut the dividend. The total then rose 100.0% to $3.00 in 2022, increased 1.7% to $3.05 in 2023 and advanced 6.6% to $3.25 in 2024. The 2025 record contains two payments totaling $1.70, down 47.7% from the prior-year total, so that observation does not show a complete four-payment year. The current $4.00 annualized rate is above each completed annual total shown since the 2021 cut.

Is the dividend covered?

The dividend consumes 12% of earnings. That relatively low earnings payout ratio leaves a substantial accounting-profit buffer between Danaos’ regular dividend and its reported earnings, although it does not capture fleet spending, debt service or the volatility inherent in marine shipping.

SmarterDividends gives the dividend a safety score of 61 and rates it C, placing it in the borderline (50-65) range. In plain terms, the regular payout appears covered by current earnings, but its resilience cannot be judged from the payout ratio alone. Danaos’ capital-intensive expansion plans and exposure to charter markets remain relevant when assessing the durability of cash coverage.

Yield and valuation

At a share price of $158.17, the $4.00 annual dividend produces a 2.53% forward yield. That is higher than the Industrials sector median forward yield of 1.66%, although the comparison does not adjust for the different cyclicality and capital requirements across industrial businesses.

The shares have recorded a 61.7% gain over one year. SmarterDividends’ fair-value estimate is $94.90, resulting in an overvalued verdict and 40% downside to fair value. That valuation assessment is separate from dividend coverage: a payout can remain covered even when the share price stands above a fair-value estimate.

What to watch

The immediate event is the October 22, 2026 payment following the October 13, 2026 ex-dividend date. Investors tracking recurring income should distinguish the higher regular payment from the extraordinary special distribution announced alongside it.

The next quarterly report will provide the next operating checkpoint. Relevant items include conversion of the $4.6 billion backlog into revenue, containership charter coverage, liquidity and leverage after the distributions, and spending on the newbuilding program. Danaos’ second-quarter filing also showed stronger dry-bulk results and continued containership expansion, making segment performance and fleet commitments important context for future capital-return decisions. The company had not provided conventional earnings guidance in its latest results, relying instead on contracted-revenue and charter-coverage disclosures.
