A dividend tracker should do three things: show the income your holdings will pay and when, warn you when a dividend is at risk, and tell you the day a company raises or cuts. Here is how five popular trackers compare on price, free plans and dividend-safety features.

How to choose a dividend tracker

  • Cut warnings beat pretty charts. A single surprise cut can wipe out years of yield. Prefer a tracker that rates dividend safety and shows how its ratings did before past cuts. Ours is public: the safety grade track record.
  • Check the free plan's holding limit. Most free plans stop at about 10 holdings, which is enough to test with your largest positions.
  • Decide whether you need tax reporting. If you file in several countries or need capital-gains reports, a reporting-first tool like Sharesight may be the better fit.
  • Linked accounts versus manual entry. Linking a brokerage saves typing but shares account data with a third party. Manual entry or CSV import keeps it private.

Free tools that work without any tracker

Whatever you use to track your portfolio, these are free on SmarterDividends with no account: the dividend calculator, the DRIP calculator, the ex-dividend date calculator, the dividend calendar and this week's dividend increases and cuts.

SmarterDividends' free plan tracks up to 10 holdings and includes the dividend calendar, safety grades on every stock page and all calculators; Snowball and Sharesight free plans cover one portfolio of 10 holdings.

Which dividend tracker warns you before a dividend cut?

Simply Safe Dividends also offers safety scores and payout-change alerts.

Is Simply Safe Dividends worth $468 a year?

It can be if you'll use its analyst notes, model portfolios and research. If you mainly want safety ratings and cut alerts on your own holdings, cheaper options exist: SmarterDividends Pro is $99 a year and its free plan covers up to 10 holdings.
