Every dividend raise and cut

Each change in a company's regular dividend, back to 1970 for the longest-listed payers: old and new amount, percent change and ex-dividend date. Companies with a steady regular dividend; funds and variable payers are in the payments file.

A raise is a regular payment more than 0.1% above the comparable earlier one; a cut is more than 1% below it. One-off payments (well above the recent median and not repeated) are treated as specials and excluded, so a special doesn't register as a raise followed by a cut. Companies whose amount changes on most payments (royalty trusts, many ADRs paid in a foreign currency) are left out; their full record is in the payments file.

Datasets FAQ

What do I get with Pro?

All five CSV files, in full, rebuilt every night from the same data that powers the site, plus everything else in Pro (safety grades on your holdings, dividend change alerts, the 12-month income forecast). Pro is $99 a year.

Can I try the data before paying?

Yes. Start the 7-day free trial (no card needed) and you can download a 200-row sample of every file to check the format and columns. The full files unlock once your subscription starts, and the 14-day money-back guarantee still applies.

How often is the data updated?

Every night, after the day's dividend, price and calendar updates finish. Each file carries the date it was built in its name, and the snapshot file has an as_of date on every row.

How far back does the history go?

Back to 1970 for the longest-listed payers, such as Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson. Younger companies and funds start from their first dividend. The payments file covers every active U.S.-listed dividend payer we track.

How are raises and cuts identified?

Each regular payment is compared with the comparable earlier one: the previous payment, or for semiannual payers the same half a year before, since interim and final dividends differ by design. More than 0.1% higher is a raise, more than 0.1% lower a cut. A one-off payment 2.5 times the recent median that isn't repeated is a special and is left out, while a jump that persists (such as a dividend resumed after years away) starts a new regular level. The same rules drive the raise and cut history on every stock page.

What can I do with the files?

Use them for your own research, models, spreadsheets and internal business work. Please don't resell or republish the files themselves. Quoting individual figures with a link to SmarterDividends is fine.

Is there an API?

Yes. A free JSON API returns one ticker, one ex-dividend date or one week of dividend changes per request, with no key. The datasets are the bulk version.

Data is provided as is, for information only, and is not investment advice. Figures are computed by SmarterDividends from exchange and company dividend data and may contain errors; report any to corrections@smarterdividends.com.
