Why some companies pay dividends and others don't

A dividend is cash a company pays its shareholders out of its profits. Mature companies with steady cash flow, such as Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson, have paid one for decades and raise it most years.

Fast-growing companies usually keep their cash to reinvest, or return it through share buybacks instead. That is why Amazon and Tesla pay nothing, and why Alphabet and Meta only began paying in 2024, once their growth slowed and their cash piles grew.

Only a company's board can declare a dividend. Until it does, any date or amount you see for a non-paying company is speculation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tesla pay dividends?

No. Tesla (TSLA) does not pay a dividend, and SmarterDividends' payment records show no cash dividend from Tesla.

Does Amazon pay dividends?

No. Amazon (AMZN) does not pay a dividend and has none in its payment record.

Does Apple pay dividends?

Yes. Apple (AAPL) pays a dividend every quarter, $1.08 per share a year.

Does Google pay dividends?

Yes. Alphabet (GOOGL), Google's parent, began paying a quarterly dividend in 2024.

Does Nvidia pay dividends?

Yes. Nvidia (NVDA) pays a small quarterly dividend; its yield is a fraction of a percent because its share price is high relative to the payout.

Does Berkshire Hathaway pay dividends?

No. Berkshire Hathaway has paid one cash dividend in its history, in 1967, and none since.

Why don't some big companies pay dividends?

They keep their cash to reinvest in growth, to buy back shares, or both. Paying a dividend is a decision of each company's board, and many technology companies start paying only once their growth slows.

How do I check whether a stock pays a dividend?

Look for a dividend yield or an ex-dividend date on its quote page, or open the company's page here: each one shows its latest dividend, schedule and full payment history.
