Mesabi Trust Cuts Quarterly Distribution to $0.05

Mesabi Trust (NYSE: MSB) cut its quarterly distribution to $0.05 per unit from $0.24, a reduction of 79.17%. The ex-dividend date was July 30, 2026.

The cut follows another reduction in 2025 and ends a one-year period of consecutive distribution growth. It also underscores the variable nature of payments from Mesabi, whose income depends primarily on royalties tied to iron ore production and shipments rather than recurring operating earnings.

Lower royalties weighed on the payout

Mesabi’s trustees said the distribution decision reflected lower royalty payments from Cleveland-Cliffs, the parent of Northshore Mining, and the absence of a bonus royalty. The trust receives royalties connected to iron ore products shipped from Silver Bay, Minnesota. Mesabi Trust distribution announcement

A recent regulatory filing explains that leasehold royalties are Mesabi’s principal revenue source and that its income is highly dependent on Northshore’s operations. Base royalties vary with both shipment volumes and selling prices, while bonus royalties depend on whether qualifying prices exceed a specified threshold. Price adjustments can also increase or reduce the cash available for distributions. Mesabi Trust quarterly report

The same filing says the trustees do not control Northshore’s mining decisions. That structure leaves Mesabi’s receipts—and consequently its distributions—exposed to production levels, shipment timing, realized iron ore prices and the operator’s use of trust lands.

What it means for income investors

At the supplied share price of $22.77, Mesabi’s stated forward annual yield is 3.91%, based on an annual dividend measure of $0.89 per unit. The trust carries a dividend safety score of 53 out of 100, corresponding to a C grade.

For income investors, the central point is that Mesabi’s quarterly payment is not a fixed corporate dividend. The $0.05 rate represents a sharp sequential reduction, and the trust’s royalty-based model means future distributions may continue to fluctuate with cash receipts. Mesabi itself cautions that royalties and distributions in one quarter are not necessarily indicative of payments in later quarters or for a full year. Mesabi Trust royalty report
