Union Pacific Raises Quarterly Dividend 2.9%

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP) increased its quarterly dividend to $1.42 per share from $1.38, a 2.9% rise. Shares traded ex-dividend on Aug. 31, 2026.

The new distribution equates to $5.68 per share annually. Based on a share price of $300.67, the forward annual yield is 1.85%.

The increase extends Union Pacific’s record of annual dividend growth to 19 consecutive years. The railroad previously cut its dividend in 1998. Its dividend safety score is 90 out of 100, corresponding to an A grade.

Union Pacific said the board’s decision reflected its commitment to strong financial results and long-term shareholder value. The company operates across 23 western states, connecting customers to domestic and global markets through its freight-rail network. Union Pacific’s announcement confirms the higher quarterly distribution and describes the company’s operating footprint.

The increase follows a strong second quarter. Union Pacific reported that net income rose 6% from a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share increased 7%. Freight revenue excluding fuel surcharges grew 4%, supported by volume growth and core pricing gains. Management also reiterated consistent annual dividend increases as part of its capital-allocation priorities. Union Pacific’s second-quarter results provide the operational and financial context.

The railroad is simultaneously pursuing its proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern. The transaction remains under regulatory review and has divided the industry, with supporters pointing to faster cross-country service and opponents raising competition concerns. Union Pacific has secured Canadian National’s support after agreeing to measures intended to preserve customer access, according to The Associated Press.

What it means for income investors

The increase adds $0.04 per share to each quarterly payment and $0.16 per share to the annualized dividend. The 19-year growth streak and A safety grade indicate a historically consistent distribution profile, while the 1.85% forward yield quantifies the current income rate at the stated share price. The pending Norfolk Southern transaction remains a significant operational and regulatory development to monitor, but the dividend increase itself represents a measured continuation of Union Pacific’s established payout policy.
