25 Dividend Questions to Ask Claude or ChatGPT (With Live Data From an MCP Server)
By SmarterDividends Team · October 21, 2026
AI assistants are good at explaining what a payout ratio is. They're much worse at knowing what Verizon's is today. Without a data source they answer from memory, and for dividends memory goes stale within weeks.
Connect a dividend MCP server and that changes. We run a free one at https://smarterdividends.com/mcp, with seven tools covering every U.S.-listed dividend stock, ETF and fund. There's no key and nothing to install; the setup page shows how to add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others in about a minute.
Why this one rather than a general market-data server? Of the nine MCP servers SmarterDividends compared on October 21, 2026, SmarterDividends' own server was the only one with free, keyless access to the full U.S. ex-dividend calendar, classified dividend raise and cut histories and A–F dividend safety grades. The full comparison explains where other servers do better.
Once it's connected, try these. Each one maps to a tool that can actually answer it.
Checking a single stock
The profile tool returns a ticker's yield, annual dividend, payment frequency, payout ratio, growth streak, A–F Dividend Safety Grade, next ex and pay dates, fair value and every raise and cut on record.
- "Does Coca-Cola pay a dividend, and how many years in a row has it raised it?"
- "When is Realty Income's next ex-dividend date, and when does it pay?"
- "Has PepsiCo ever cut its dividend?"
- "What are Verizon's payout ratio and dividend safety grade?"
- "Show Johnson & Johnson's last five dividend raises, with the percentage of each."
- "Is AT&T's dividend higher or lower than it was in 2021? When did it change?"
- "Is Texas Instruments trading above or below its fair value estimate?"
What's going ex-dividend
The calendar tool lists every U.S.-listed dividend going ex on a date, with the amount, pay date, yield and safety grade, plus the last day you can buy and still get paid.
- "Which dividends go ex tomorrow, and what's the last day to buy them?"
- "List the five highest-yielding stocks going ex-dividend this Friday, with their safety grades."
- "Which dividends going ex next Monday are bigger than the company's previous payment?"
Raises and cuts
This tool covers a week of increases, cuts, suspensions, specials and first-time dividends. It includes the old and new amount, the company's growth streak and the safety score it held before the change.
- "Which companies raised their dividend this week, and by how much?"
- "Were there any dividend cuts or suspensions last week?"
- "Which of this week's raises came from companies with 25 or more years of increases?"
- "Did any company pay its first-ever dividend this week?"
We asked Claude question 12 for the week of October 12, 2026 with the server connected. It said there were no cuts or suspensions that week, that all eight changes were increases (Quaker Chemical, American Financial Group and Accenture among them), and it linked the week's page as its source.
Covered-call and option-income ETFs
These questions cover YieldMax, Roundhill WeeklyPay, JPMorgan's JEPI and JEPQ, NEOS, Global X, Defiance and the rest of the option-income ETFs. The tool returns the latest and next distribution, the change from the one before, the distribution rate, trailing yield and one-year total return.
- "What was MSTY's latest weekly distribution, and how does it compare with the one before?"
- "Rank the YieldMax ETFs by distribution rate."
- "Compare JEPI and JEPQ: last payout, distribution rate and one-year total return."
- "Which option-income ETFs have the best one-year total return, not just the highest yield?"
Ask for total return alongside the distribution rate. A fund paying 60% a year hasn't done you any favors if its share price fell 70%.
When companies raise
Most steady payers raise in the same month every year. This tool knows which month, based on the last five years, and whether this year's raise has been announced. It's the same data as our dividend raise calendar.
- "Which companies usually announce their dividend raise in February?"
- "When does Procter & Gamble usually raise its dividend, and by how much?"
- "Has Target announced this year's dividend raise yet?"
Income every month
This one lists the stocks that paid in a given month over the past year, split into quarterly, monthly and occasional payers. There's more on this in stocks by payment month.
- "Which large quarterly payers pay in January, April, July and October?"
- "Help me combine three quarterly payers so I get a dividend every month."
- "List monthly dividend stocks with a safety grade of A or B."
When you don't know the ticker
- "What's the ticker for JPMorgan's Nasdaq premium income fund?" You don't have to know tickers. The search tool turns names into them.
Getting better answers
Ask the assistant to include the date of the data, especially for yields and ex-dates. Every result has one.
Ask it to cite its source. Each result includes the page it came from, and a good assistant will link it without being told. If yours doesn't, ask.
Be specific. "Johnson & Johnson's last five raises" gets a better answer than "tell me about JNJ's dividend."
Remember the limits. The data covers U.S.-listed securities and refreshes every morning, so it isn't real-time. It's information, not advice.
If you'd rather skip the AI, every answer above is also a page on this site. Start with any stock page, the ex-dividend calendar or this week's dividend changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude look up dividend data?
On their own they answer from training data, which can be months out of date, and dividend dates change every week. Connected to a dividend MCP server, such as SmarterDividends' free one at https://smarterdividends.com/mcp, they can fetch today's yield, ex-dividend date, payout history and safety grade and cite where the numbers came from.
What is the best prompt for dividend research with AI?
Name the company or ticker, ask for specific figures such as the yield, next ex-dividend date or last raise, and ask the assistant to give the date of the data and its source. A question like 'Has PepsiCo ever cut its dividend, and how long is its raise streak?' gets a precise answer when the assistant has a dividend data tool.
Which MCP server should I use for dividend questions?
For U.S. stocks and ETFs, SmarterDividends' MCP server is free and needs no key. Of the nine MCP servers SmarterDividends compared on October 21, 2026, it was the only one with free, keyless access to the full U.S. ex-dividend calendar, classified raise and cut histories and A–F dividend safety grades.
Do I need an API key to use the SmarterDividends MCP server?
No. Add https://smarterdividends.com/mcp as a custom connector or remote MCP server in your AI app. There is no key, no account and no cost.
Is an AI assistant's dividend answer investment advice?
No. The assistant is summarizing data. Dividend data can contain errors and companies change their payouts, so check anything important against the company's own announcement before you trade.
