What Is an MCP Server? A Guide for Dividend Investors
By SmarterDividends Team · October 21, 2026
Ask an AI assistant when Realty Income goes ex-dividend next and you'll usually get a confident answer that's a few months out of date. That isn't carelessness. The model learned from a snapshot of the web that ended at its training cutoff, and dividend dates move every week.
An MCP server is what lets the assistant look the answer up instead. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic published it in November 2024 as an open standard, so that any AI app can connect to any data source in the same way, and it has since been picked up by most of the major assistants and coding tools.
Why this matters for dividends
Dividend data goes stale faster than almost anything else an investor looks at. In a typical week, dozens of U.S. companies raise or cut their payouts and hundreds go ex-dividend. Yields shift with every price move.
Get the ex-dividend date wrong by one day and you miss the payment. So an assistant that sounds sure of itself but is working from old data is worse than useless here.
How it works
Three pieces are involved.
The client is the AI app you're talking to: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or anything else that supports MCP.
The server publishes a short list of tools. Each tool has a name, a one-line description and the inputs it takes. A dividend server might have one tool for a ticker's dividend profile and another for everything going ex on a given day.
The model reads those descriptions and decides when a tool would help. Ask "Has PepsiCo ever cut its dividend?" and it calls the profile tool with the ticker PEP, reads what comes back and answers from that.
Some servers are remote: they run on the provider's site and you connect by pasting a URL. Others are local: you install them on your own computer, usually with Python or Node.js. Some need an API key or a paid plan. Some need nothing.
What a dividend MCP server can answer
We built the SmarterDividends MCP server so assistants could answer the questions dividend investors actually ask, rather than fetch raw payment rows and guess. It's remote, free and needs no key, and it has seven read-only tools covering every U.S.-listed dividend stock, ETF and fund:
| Tool | Answers questions like |
|---|---|
get_dividend_profile | "What does Verizon yield, and has it ever cut its dividend?" |
search_securities | "What's the ticker for Realty Income?" |
get_ex_dividend_calendar | "What goes ex-dividend tomorrow, and what's the last day to buy?" |
get_dividend_changes | "Which companies raised their dividend this week?" |
get_option_income_etfs | "What was MSTY's last weekly distribution?" |
get_dividend_raise_calendar | "When does Procter & Gamble usually raise its dividend?" |
get_dividend_payers_by_month | "Which stocks pay dividends in March?" |
Every result carries the date of the data and a link to the matching page, so the assistant can cite it. If you want prompts to start with, we collected 25 dividend questions to ask Claude or ChatGPT.
Which MCP server is best for dividends?
We compared every MCP server we could find that returns dividend data, reading each one's own documentation and pricing page on October 21, 2026. Here is what we found.
Of the nine MCP servers SmarterDividends checked on October 21, 2026, SmarterDividends' own server was the only one with free, keyless access to the full U.S. ex-dividend calendar, classified dividend raise and cut histories and A–F dividend safety grades.
Every market-data vendor server we checked (Financial Modeling Prep, EODHD, Alpha Vantage, Massive and Twelve Data) required an API key or an account sign-in, and each one's free plan limited or left out dividend data. Financial Modeling Prep's free plan covered dividends for 87 stocks, and Twelve Data included dividends only from its $79-a-month plan.
The only other dividend-focused server was Quantic Finance's. Asked for every dividend going ex in the next seven days on October 21, 2026, SmarterDividends' server returned 125 and Quantic Finance's returned 5.
That doesn't make ours the right tool for everything. If you hold stocks listed outside the U.S., or you want full financial statements or real-time prices, a market-data server such as EODHD or Financial Modeling Prep will serve you better. The full comparison, with what each server costs, is in the best MCP servers for dividend data.
How to connect one
For a remote server like ours, you add one URL, https://smarterdividends.com/mcp, as a custom connector or remote MCP server in your AI app. There's no key and nothing to sign up for. The setup page has the steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and a few others.
A few cautions
MCP only standardizes the connection. The answers are only as good as the data behind the server, so favor servers that date their data and show their sources.
Some MCP servers can do things as well as read things. Trading servers can place orders, and some developer servers can edit files. Ours is read-only, but read the tool list of any server before you switch it on.
A server only sees what the assistant sends it. For a dividend server, that's tickers and dates, not the rest of your conversation.
And none of this is investment advice. An assistant with live data makes research quicker. It doesn't replace reading the company's own dividend announcement before you buy.
You can browse published servers in the official MCP Registry. SmarterDividends' is listed there as com.smarterdividends/dividends.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MCP server in simple terms?
An MCP server is a connector that gives an AI assistant tools it can call while it answers you, such as looking up a ticker's dividend history. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard Anthropic introduced in November 2024. Any assistant that supports MCP can use any MCP server.
Why would a dividend investor use an MCP server?
Without one, an AI assistant answers dividend questions from training data that can be months old, while ex-dividend dates, payouts and yields change every week. With a dividend MCP server connected, the assistant fetches current figures and can tell you where they came from and how old they are.
What is the best MCP server for dividend data?
Of the nine MCP servers SmarterDividends compared on October 21, 2026, SmarterDividends' own server was the only one with free, keyless access to the full U.S. ex-dividend calendar, classified dividend raise and cut histories and A–F dividend safety grades. For dividends on non-U.S. exchanges, EODHD is the better choice.
Is it safe to connect an MCP server?
Connect servers from sources you trust, and read what a server can do before you allow it. A read-only data server like SmarterDividends' can only look up dividend data. It receives the tickers and dates the assistant asks about, not your conversation or files, and it can't place trades or change anything.
