California Water Service Group raised its quarterly dividend 1.5% to $0.34 a share from $0.335. CWT trades ex-dividend on November 9, 2026, and the payment is due November 20, 2026.

Why the dividend changed

The increase comes as the regulated water utility benefits from higher authorized rates and continues a heavy infrastructure program. Third-quarter net income reached $65.4 million, or $1.05 per diluted share, compared with $61.2 million, or $1.03 per diluted share, a year earlier. Revenue increased to $332.2 million as rate changes and customer growth more than offset lower water usage, according to the company’s third-quarter results.

The regulatory backdrop is central to dividend capacity. An April decision by the California Public Utilities Commission authorized additional revenue through 2028 and approved $1.45 billion of infrastructure investment from 2024 through 2027. California Water Service said the decision would support spending on water quality, reliability, security and supply projects while allowing the utility to recover those costs through rates. The rate-case decision provides greater visibility into the earnings base that supports distributions.

Capital requirements remain substantial. The company invested $424.8 million during the first nine months of 2026, while preparing to acquire Nexus Water Group systems in Nevada and Oregon. Regulators in both states approved the transactions, and management expects them to close in the fourth quarter. California Water Service has also arranged additional debt and equity funding, which it said would finance ongoing initiatives into the first half of 2027. Those financing needs help explain why the latest dividend step is measured despite stronger operating results.

Dividend track record

The payment record shows consistent annual growth alongside some uneven quarterly amounts. Full-year distributions rose from $0.85 in 2020 to $0.92 in 2021, $1.00 in 2022, $1.04 in 2023, $1.12 in 2024 and $1.24 in 2025. The annual increases ranged from 4.0% to 10.7% over that period, while five-year dividend growth was 7.1% annual growth.

Recent quarterly payments require context. CWT paid $0.34 on the February 10, 2025, ex-dividend cycle, followed by three payments of $0.30. A company filing identifies the first payment of 2025 as including a one-time special dividend, so the subsequent reduction did not represent an annual dividend cut. Payments then moved to $0.335 for the February 9, May 11 and August 10, 2026, ex-dividend cycles before the latest increase to $0.34.

The company’s own record is longer than the recent growth series alone indicates. California Water Service said in its October results that 2026 marked its 59th consecutive annual dividend increase. The combination of rising annual totals and no recorded annual cut distinguishes the temporary effect of the 2025 special payment from the underlying dividend trend.

Is the dividend covered?

The dividend consumes 57% of earnings. That means the distribution is covered by reported profit rather than requiring all earnings to be returned to shareholders. It also leaves room within earnings for infrastructure spending, debt service and acquisitions, although those uses compete for capital.

SmarterDividends rates the dividend A, with a safety score of 89. That falls in the very safe range of 80-100. The grade reflects solid earnings coverage and the company’s established payment history, while the regulated utility model provides recurring revenue tied to authorized rates.

Coverage still depends on regulatory recovery and access to financing. California Water Service has said internally generated funds after dividends are not sufficient to meet its full capital-expenditure requirements, making debt and equity issuance part of its normal funding model. Its first-quarter filing also identified higher wholesale water rates and interest costs as pressures to monitor.

Yield and valuation

At a share price of $48.50, CWT’s forward yield is 2.76%. That is below the Utilities sector median forward yield of 4.20%, so the shares provide less current dividend income than the sector benchmark. The listed annual dividend is $1.34 a share, equal to $134.00 of annual income for 100 shares.

SmarterDividends estimates fair value at $30.48 and classifies the shares as overvalued. The estimate represents 37% downside from the stated share price. The valuation assessment is separate from the A dividend-safety grade: one measures the relationship between price and estimated value, while the other evaluates the likelihood that the dividend can be maintained.

What to watch

The immediate dates are November 9, 2026, when the shares trade ex-dividend, and November 20, 2026, when the $0.34 payment is scheduled. Investors buying on or after the ex-dividend date will not receive that payment.

The next operating checkpoints are the planned fourth-quarter closing of the Nevada and Oregon acquisitions and the company’s next quarterly report. The transactions would extend California Water Service’s regulated footprint and require integration and financing. The original Nexus acquisition announcement said the purchase would be funded with working capital and existing debt and equity facilities. Regulatory recovery of infrastructure and PFAS-treatment spending, water-production costs and further capital-market activity will also be relevant to dividend coverage.
