SmarterDividends data for November 2026 finds 40 large U.S. dividend stocks yielding 7% or more with at least two warning signs, out of 70 steady payers examined. The screen covers stocks with a market value of $1 billion or more, and the warning list includes weak safety grades, uncovered payouts, unusually elevated yields and recent cuts.
A yield can climb because a falling share price makes the current dividend look larger against that price. Medical Properties Trust (MPT) shows the pattern plainly: its shares fell 61% over one year, its forward yield reached 19.1%, and it had already cut its dividend in 2025. A high yield backed by payouts above earnings or free cash flow adds another source of pressure.
Not every stock above 7% looks strained. Saul Centers (BFS), OneMain Holdings (OMF) and VICI Properties (VICI) have B safety grades and none of the five warning signs in our screen. Their presence keeps the screen focused on the combination of yield and risk signals, rather than yield alone.
When a falling price inflates the yield
Medical Properties Trust is not the only case where a steep decline sits beside a much higher-than-normal yield. Perusahaan Perseroan (Persero) PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (TLK) fell 48% over one year. Its 11.2% yield is more than twice its five-year average of 5.1%, while its earnings payout is 122%. It also cut its dividend in 2022 and carries a D safety grade.
Blackstone Mortgage Trust (BXMT) fell 44% over one year and now yields 16.4%, compared with its five-year average of 10.1%. It has a D safety grade and cut its dividend in 2025. Dynex Capital (DX) fell 24%, yields 19.0% against a five-year average of 11.8%, and pays out 206% of free cash flow.
Autohome (ATHM) combines a 16% one-year decline with an 8.1% yield, up from a five-year average of 3.8%. Its earnings payout is 274%, its safety grade is D, and it cut its dividend in 2022.
The table collects several of the clearest combinations. Positive price returns do not erase weak coverage or a recent cut.
| Company | Forward yield | Safety grade | One-year price return | Other warning signs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medical Properties Trust | 19.1% | D | fell 61% | Yield versus 8.0% average; cut in 2025 |
| Dynex Capital | 19.0% | D | fell 24% | 206% free-cash-flow payout; yield versus 11.8% average |
| Blackstone Mortgage Trust | 16.4% | D | fell 44% | Yield versus 10.1% average; cut in 2025 |
| FLEX LNG (FLNG) | 11.6% | D | rose 12% | 158% earnings payout; 113% free-cash-flow payout; cut in 2024 |
| Hercules Capital (HTGC) | 11.5% | D | fell 8% | 101% earnings payout; 129% free-cash-flow payout; cut in 2023 |
| Trinity Capital (TRIN) | 11.4% | D | rose 15% | 116% earnings payout; 283% free-cash-flow payout; cut in 2023 |
| Kimbell Royalty Partners (KRP) | 10.7% | D | rose 36% | 178% earnings payout; 103% free-cash-flow payout; cut in 2025 |
| Golub Capital BDC (GBDC) | 10.2% | D | fell 10% | 218% earnings payout; 124% free-cash-flow payout; cut in 2024 |
Coverage catches risks that price misses
FLEX LNG and Kimbell Royalty Partners gained 12% and 36%, respectively, over one year. Yet both pay out more than 100% of earnings and free cash flow, carry D safety grades, and have cut their dividends since 2021. Trinity Capital gained 15%, but its 11.4% yield comes with payouts of 116% of earnings and 283% of free cash flow.
Oaktree Specialty Lending (OCSL) provides an even starker earnings figure. It pays out more than three times its earnings and 130% of free cash flow, has a D safety grade, and cut its dividend in 2025. Its shares fell 12% over one year, leaving the forward yield at 10.5%.
Business development companies require care when reading earnings coverage because unrealized gains and losses can make earnings swing. For those companies, our free-cash-flow payout and safety grade carry more information than the earnings payout alone.
The concentration is also narrow. Financial Services accounts for 13 of the 40 warning cases, Real Estate for 12, and Energy for 8. The remaining cases are spread across Communication Services, Industrials, Utilities and Healthcare.
Low grades have often come before cuts
The Safety score track record: every cut and its prior grade provides a check on the screen. Since April 1, 2026, our records include 23 dividend cuts for stocks that had a grade beforehand. Of those, 12 were graded D or F before the cut, equal to 52%.
That result stands against the current grade distribution. Only 8% of all graded dividend stocks are rated D or F today, while 67% are rated A or B. Yet just 5 of the 23 cutters had an A or B grade before the reduction.
A D or F grade does not forecast a cut for every company. Some stocks on this month’s list will keep paying. The record shows that weak grades have appeared among cutters far more often than their current share of all graded dividend stocks would suggest.
Three high yielders pass every test
Saul Centers yields 8.2%, carries a B safety grade and has no warning signs. Its shares fell 6% over one year, but the decline has not been accompanied by any of the coverage, yield-history or cut signals used here.
OneMain Holdings yields 7.4% with a B grade and no warning signs. VICI Properties yields 7.3%, also with a B grade and no warning signs, despite a 15% one-year price decline. VICI’s market value is $27.8 billion, compared with $6.5 billion for OneMain and $1.0 billion for Saul Centers.
These three names show why a high yield is not enough to label a stock a trap. Our safe high-yield dividend stocks screen separates yield backed by stronger data from yield paired with multiple warnings.
How we did this
We screened 96 U.S.-listed dividend stocks worth $1 billion or more with a forward yield of 7% or more as of November 6, 2026. We set aside 26 companies whose last four payments differ by more than 50%, because their forward yields do not represent steady rates. For the remaining 70, we counted five warning signs: a D or F safety grade, an earnings payout above 100% except for REITs, a free-cash-flow payout above 100%, a yield at least 1.5 times its five-year average, and a cut since 2021. Two or more signs put a stock on the list.
