Huntington Ingalls Industries raised its quarterly cash dividend 2.2% to $1.41 a share from $1.38. The increase takes the annual dividend to $5.64. The shares are scheduled to trade ex-dividend on November 27, 2026, with payment set for December 11, 2026.

Why the dividend changed

HII’s board approved a regular quarterly increase rather than a payment connected to a split, merger, spin-off or special distribution. The company did not give a specific reason for the increase in its October 21 declaration.

The decision followed stronger operating results and improved shipbuilding guidance. Second-quarter revenue grew 10.9% to $3.4 billion, while net earnings increased to $208 million. HII raised its full-year shipbuilding revenue guidance to between $10.2 billion and $10.4 billion and lifted the lower end of its expected shipbuilding operating-margin range. It maintained its full-year free-cash-flow outlook of between $500 million and $600 million, according to the second-quarter earnings release filed with the SEC.

Cash generation remains uneven. Second-quarter free cash flow was negative $150 million, leaving the company dependent on a stronger second half to meet its full-year outlook. Management has also said capital allocation begins with reinvestment in the shipyards, including substantial spending intended to expand capacity and improve production throughput, according to its full-year earnings call transcript. The modest dividend step-up is consistent with balancing shareholder distributions against those operating requirements.

Long-term demand has strengthened. In July, the U.S. Navy awarded contract modifications to HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat supporting additional Columbia-class and Virginia-class submarines, as well as shipyard infrastructure. The awards add production visibility but also require HII to deliver higher throughput from a labor- and capital-intensive shipbuilding system, according to the company’s contract announcement.

Dividend track record

The increase extends HII’s dividend-growth streak to 12 consecutive years. Its recent payment history shows a deliberate annual reset: four quarterly payments of $1.35 were followed by four payments of $1.38, and the next scheduled payment rises to $1.41.

Full-year distributions have advanced from $4.23 per share in 2020 to $5.43 in 2025. The annual increase was 8.8% in 2021, then moderated to 3.9% in 2022, rose to 5.0% in 2023 and slowed to 4.6% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2025. That pattern shows continued growth at a generally slower pace than at the start of the period.

The five-year record amounts to 5.6% annual growth. The latest 2.2% increase is below that longer-term rate, reinforcing the view that HII is maintaining the growth streak while reserving cash for shipyard investment and execution.

Is the dividend covered?

The dividend consumes 33% of earnings. That ratio leaves most earnings retained by the company and provides a meaningful buffer between reported profit and the cash commitment to shareholders.

SmarterDividends rates the dividend A, with a safety score of 91. That falls within the “very safe” range of 80 to 100. The grade reflects the low earnings payout and the established record of annual increases, although HII’s cash generation can vary materially between quarters because of contract billing, working-capital movements and capital spending.

Yield and valuation

At a share price of $281.05, HII’s forward yield is 2.01%, compared with the Industrials sector median of 1.63%. The annualized payment produces $564.00 of income for every 100 shares.

SmarterDividends estimates fair value at $307.95 and classifies the valuation as fair, with 12% upside. The yield premium over the sector median therefore accompanies a valuation that is neither classified as expensive nor discounted.

What to watch

HII is scheduled to report third-quarter results on October 29, 2026, according to its earnings-call notice. The central dividend-related issue will be whether reported cash generation remains consistent with the company’s full-year outlook after the second-quarter cash outflow.

Investors can also track shipbuilding throughput, working capital and capital expenditures. Those items determine how much cash remains after HII funds capacity expansion and performs its Navy contracts.

For the dividend itself, the next milestones are the November 27, 2026 ex-dividend date and the December 11, 2026 payment date. That payment will be the first at the new $1.41 quarterly rate.
