Middlesex Water Company raised its quarterly dividend 5.6% to $0.38 per share from $0.36. The shares will trade ex-dividend on November 16, 2026, and the payment is due December 1, 2026, according to the company’s dividend declaration.
Why the dividend changed
Middlesex did not identify a single financial metric or corporate transaction as the reason for the increase. The board’s announcement presented the decision as the continuation of a long-running dividend policy, rather than a response to a merger, split, spin-off or special situation. The company said it has raised the dividend for 54 consecutive years and has paid cash dividends in varying amounts each year since 1912.
The operating backdrop was supportive. Second-quarter net income rose to $14.8 million from $10.8 million a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share increased to $0.79 from $0.60. Revenue reached $56.4 million, helped by increased wholesale demand, customer consumption and base-rate increases in the Middlesex system, as well as consumption, customer growth and rate increases at Tidewater. Chief Executive Officer Nadine Leslie attributed the quarter’s performance partly to wholesale demand and favorable weather, according to the second-quarter earnings release.
The dividend increase also comes during a heavy infrastructure program. Middlesex invested approximately $53 million in water and wastewater assets during the first half of 2026, representing approximately 42% of its planned $126 million annual investment. Its program includes water-main replacements, treatment projects and work needed to address PFAS. Those projects support the regulated asset base but also require substantial financing.
Cash generation therefore remains an important counterweight to the stronger earnings. Operating cash flow for the first half fell $4.0 million to $28.1 million because of higher vendor and income-tax payments, partly offset by approved rate increases. Middlesex said it funds construction with internally generated cash, debt, common-stock issuance and government loan programs, according to its second-quarter Form 10-Q.
Dividend track record
The payment history shows a stepwise pattern. Middlesex paid $0.34 for four consecutive quarters beginning with the November 15, 2024, ex-dividend date, then paid $0.36 for the next four quarters through August 17, 2026. The new $0.38 rate continues that pattern of holding the quarterly payment steady before the next increase.
Full-year distributions rose from $1.26 in 2023 to $1.32 in 2024 and $1.38 in 2025. Those totals increased 6.9%, 4.0% and 4.9%, respectively. The five-year record works out to 5.8% annual growth.
The apparent decline from $1.40 in 2021 to $1.18 in 2022, a fall of 15.4%, reflects a comparison between five payments in 2021 and four in 2022. It does not match the later quarterly-payment pattern, which shows increases rather than a rate cut. The company’s stated 54-year record is longer than the recent payment history used for this review and is reported under the permitted exception for the company’s own consecutive-year claim.
Is the dividend covered?
The dividend consumes 55% of earnings. That leaves a meaningful portion of profit available for infrastructure investment, debt service and other corporate requirements, although accounting earnings and cash available after construction spending are not the same measure.
SmarterDividends rates the dividend A with a safety score of 91. That means very safe (score 80-100): the current earnings payout leaves a comparatively wide buffer before profits would cease to cover the distribution. The grade does not remove the need to monitor cash requirements because Middlesex is simultaneously undertaking a large, debt- and equity-supported capital program.
The first-half decline in operating cash flow reinforces that distinction. Rate increases can improve revenue and earnings, but the timing of customer collections, tax payments, vendor bills and construction spending can make cash coverage less even from period to period.
Yield and valuation
At a $56.22 share price, Middlesex has a 2.56% forward yield. That is below the Utilities sector median forward yield of 4.11%, so the stock provides less current dividend income than the median sector company on this measure.
The annual dividend per share is $1.44, equal to $144.00 of annual income per 100 shares. SmarterDividends estimates fair value at $38.20 and classifies the shares as overvalued, corresponding to 32% downside to fair value. The valuation assessment is separate from the A safety grade: one evaluates the share price, while the other evaluates the dividend’s coverage and continuity.
What to watch
The immediate dividend milestone is the November 16, 2026, ex-dividend date, followed by payment on December 1, 2026. Investors must own the shares before the ex-dividend date to qualify under standard market settlement rules.
The next operating checkpoint is the third-quarter report. Middlesex scheduled the release for after the market close on October 29, 2026, with the results and Form 10-Q to be posted in its investor-relations section, according to the company’s earnings announcement.
The key items are earnings coverage, operating cash flow and progress on the infrastructure program. Updates on wholesale demand, weather-sensitive consumption, approved rate recovery and financing will show how the company is balancing its dividend with required investment in regulated water systems.
