Royce Small-Cap Trust Raises Quarterly Distribution to $0.33
Royce Small-Cap Trust increased its quarterly distribution by 6.45%, with shares trading ex-dividend on Sept. 11, 2026.
RVT — Royce Small-Cap Trust, Inc.Royce Small-Cap Trust Inc. (NYSE: RVT) raised its quarterly common-stock distribution to $0.33 per share from $0.31, an increase of 6.45%. The shares traded ex-dividend on Sept. 11, 2026.
The increase extends the trust’s distribution-growth run to two consecutive years. That recent record follows a reduction in 2023, underscoring that closed-end fund distributions can move in both directions.
Royce confirmed the latest declaration in its third-quarter distribution announcement. Stockholders may receive the distribution in additional common shares or elect cash, according to the company’s release.
A managed distribution, not a conventional dividend
RVT’s payout differs from a dividend funded solely by an operating company’s earnings. The trust follows a managed-distribution policy tied to a rolling average of recent quarter-end net asset values. The fourth-quarter amount may also be affected by the minimum distribution required under federal tax rules. The board can amend or terminate the policy, according to the trust’s SEC-filed semiannual report.
That formula means the latest increase is consistent with changes in the trust’s net asset value rather than necessarily representing a discretionary signal about future earnings. Royce also cautions that investors should not infer investment performance from the size of a distribution or the terms of the policy. The distribution’s reported sources remain estimates until final tax characterization is completed.
RVT is an exchange-traded closed-end fund focused primarily on small-cap companies. Royce describes it as the first small-cap closed-end fund and says it has used the same broad investment approach since its inception in 1986. Its strategy combines several investment themes and emphasizes businesses with strong fundamentals or prospects that the manager considers attractively valued, according to the fund overview.
What it means for income investors
At the supplied share price of $17.78, RVT carries a forward annual yield of 7.7%. The higher quarterly payment increases near-term cash income, but the trust’s history and managed-distribution structure mean the payout should not be treated as fixed.
SmarterDividends assigns RVT a dividend-safety score of 64 out of 100, equivalent to a C grade. Together with the 2023 cut, that rating points to a distribution record that is currently improving but has shown variability.
