Seagate Technology Holdings plc raised its quarterly dividend 2.7% to $0.76 a share from $0.74. The next ex-dividend date is December 23, 2026, and payment is scheduled for January 7, 2027.
Why the dividend changed
The increase followed a sharp improvement in Seagate’s earnings and cash generation as demand strengthened for high-capacity storage used by cloud operators. Seagate reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $4.2 billion, GAAP diluted earnings of $7.59 a share and free cash flow of $1.5 billion. Management described both profitability and free cash flow as quarterly records. The company also retired $1.2 billion of debt during the quarter and another $750 million afterward, strengthening the balance sheet behind the higher payout. Chief Executive Dave Mosley linked the performance to stronger demand, longer-term customer visibility, supply discipline and value-based pricing. He said Seagate’s technology roadmap and improved balance sheet supported “strong cash generation and increased shareholder returns over the long term.” The dividend increase therefore accompanied a broader capital-allocation program rather than a one-off transaction. There was no split, merger, spin-off or special distribution behind the change. Seagate’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 results
The operating backdrop had already improved during fiscal 2026. Full-year revenue reached $12.2 billion, while free cash flow rose to $3.1 billion as cloud data-center demand strengthened and Seagate expanded production of its heat-assisted magnetic recording, or HAMR, products. The company has since announced that Microsoft Azure qualified a configuration combining Seagate’s HAMR and shingled-magnetic-recording technology with Broadcom connectivity equipment, widening the deployment path for its high-capacity drives. Dividend track record
The new payment extends Seagate’s dividend-growth streak to 2 consecutive years. Its most recent four payments were each $0.74, following four payments of $0.72. The move to $0.76 continues that stepwise pattern of one increase followed by several equal quarterly distributions.
Full-year payments rose from $2.62 in 2020 to $2.71 in 2021 and $2.80 in 2022. They remained unchanged at $2.80 in 2023, then increased 0.7% to $2.82 in 2024 and 2.8% to $2.90 in 2025. That sequence shows slow, measured increases rather than rapid compounding. The 5-year record is 2.1% annual growth, consistent with the relatively modest 2.7% increase just declared.
Is the dividend covered?
The dividend consumes 21% of earnings, leaving most reported profit outside the payout. SmarterDividends rates the dividend A with a safety score of 92, within the “very safe” range of 80-100. In plain terms, the low earnings payout and high safety score indicate substantial earnings coverage and room for ordinary business volatility, although future payments remain subject to board approval and Seagate’s cash needs.
The latest quarter reinforces that assessment. Record free cash flow coincided with debt reduction, capital investment and shareholder distributions, indicating that the company did not need to choose between the dividend and balance-sheet repair. Seagate nevertheless operates in the cyclical computer-hardware market, where cloud spending, product pricing and customer inventory can cause large changes in earnings and cash generation.
Yield and valuation
At a share price of $697.97, Seagate’s forward yield is 0.46%, below the Technology sector median of 1.32%. The income is therefore modest relative to both the share price and the broader sector. The annual dividend is $2.96 a share, equal to $296.00 of annual income for every 100 shares.
SmarterDividends estimates fair value at $363.14 and classifies the shares as overvalued, with 42% downside to that estimate. The stock’s 127.9% 1-year gain helps explain why the yield remains low despite the higher quarterly payment: the share price has risen much faster than the dividend.
What to watch
The immediate dates are December 23, 2026, for the next ex-dividend date and January 7, 2027, for payment. Investors will then have another quarter of results against which to assess whether operating cash generation continues to support the higher rate.
Seagate guided for fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenue of $4.8 billion, plus or minus $100 million, and non-GAAP diluted earnings of $9.20 a share, plus or minus $0.20. The central operating issues are cloud-storage demand, pricing discipline and the pace at which customers qualify and deploy the Mozaic HAMR platform. Debt reduction and the balance between repurchases, investment and dividends will also show how management allocates the stronger cash flow. Seagate’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 results
