Stepan Company raised its quarterly dividend 2.5% to $0.405 per share from $0.395. The shares trade ex-dividend on December 1, 2026, and the payment is due December 15, 2026.
Why the dividend changed
Stepan gave no specific financial rationale in its dividend declaration, beyond noting the continuation of its record of annual increases. The timing, however, placed the decision alongside a stronger third quarter, progress on its cost-reduction program and an emphasis on cash generation and debt repayment.
Reported third-quarter net income rose 64% from a year earlier to $17.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA increased 18% to $66.3 million, supported by global volume growth, margin recovery and savings from Project Catalyst. Organic sales volume rose 7%, with growth across all three operating segments, according to the company’s third-quarter results.
Cash flow remained a constraint as well as a support. Stepan generated $8.2 million of free cash flow during the quarter, with higher working-capital requirements limiting the result. The company also completed a $28.5 million land sale near its Millsdale site and said all proceeds would be used to repay debt. Management maintained its full-year expectations for adjusted EBITDA growth, positive free cash flow and further balance-sheet deleveraging.
Project Catalyst is central to that financial program. The restructuring includes facility and asset actions as well as a reduction of about 100 salaried positions approved during the third quarter, according to Stepan’s July regulatory filing. The latest increase is modest enough to preserve cash for those initiatives while still lifting shareholder income.
Dividend track record
The company describes the increase as its 59th consecutive year of higher cash dividends. That longer company-reported record establishes the historical context for what has recently become a pattern of smaller annual steps.
Stepan paid $0.385 for each of the four quarters beginning with the November 29, 2024, ex-dividend date. The rate then moved to $0.395 for four consecutive payments beginning with the November 28, 2025, ex-dividend date. The new $0.405 rate continues that once-a-year adjustment pattern.
Full-year payments rose from $1.13 per share in 2020 to $1.25 in 2021, $1.37 in 2022 and $1.47 in 2023. Growth then moderated: the annual total increased 2.7% to $1.51 in 2024 and another 2.7% to $1.55 in 2025. The five-year record is equivalent to 7.0% annual growth, but the latest increase confirms that the recent pace is below the earlier part of that period.
Is the dividend covered?
The dividend consumes 76% of earnings. Earnings therefore cover the distribution, although that payout ratio leaves less room for operating setbacks than a substantially lower ratio would. The restrained increase limits the additional claim on earnings while Stepan works through restructuring costs, working-capital demands and debt reduction.
SmarterDividends rates the dividend A, with a safety score of 89. That falls within the “very safe” range of 80-100, meaning the broader record of payment reliability and financial capacity remains strong despite the relatively elevated earnings payout ratio. The grade addresses dividend safety, not whether the shares are attractively valued.
Yield and valuation
The forward yield is 2.37%, compared with a 1.91% median for the Basic Materials sector. The higher yield gives Stepan more current income than the sector benchmark without placing it among unusually high-yielding securities.
At the new rate, the annual dividend is $1.62 per share. A holding of 100 shares produces $162.00 in annual dividend income before taxes, assuming the rate remains unchanged and all four quarterly payments are made.
The shares were priced at $69.99. SmarterDividends estimates fair value at $40.30 and classifies the stock as overvalued, with 37% downside to fair value. That valuation assessment is separate from the A safety grade: a dividend can be well supported even when the share price stands above an estimate of underlying value.
What to watch
The next immediate milestone is the December 1, 2026, ex-dividend date, followed by payment on December 15, 2026. Investors must own the shares before the ex-dividend date to qualify for that distribution under normal settlement rules.
Beyond the payment calendar, the next full-year results will show whether Stepan met management’s objectives for adjusted EBITDA growth, positive free cash flow and further deleveraging. Working-capital requirements merit attention because they reduced third-quarter free cash flow even as earnings improved.
Project Catalyst execution is another concrete measure. The company is balancing restructuring charges, facility actions and workforce reductions against expected operating savings. Debt repayment from the Millsdale land sale and the conversion of stronger operating results into cash will indicate how much financial flexibility remains after funding the higher dividend.
